Hear From Our Volunteers
A lot of the people who help us have a life changing experience.
Volunteering with Wax and Gold is a rare opportunity to experience a different culture and to utilize your neonatal skills. The Ethiopian medical and nursing staff were so congenial and welcoming, and It was an honor to work with their team. It was really memorable to be invited to a traditional birth ceremony of a staff nurse.
The founding members of Wax and Gold have dedicated so much time and worked so diligently over numerous trips to establish a strong working relationship with the hospital staff and students. The program is well focused and volunteer time is well utilized. Wax and Gold is truly an unforgettable experience which I will always cherish. Volunteered November 2017
I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to travel to Ethiopia to help teach the second certifying class of ALS nurses at Saint Paul Hospital to perform The Ballard Scale for assessment of gestational age in full-term and pre-term infants. I also helped with contributions to the first data collection system that will enable research for enhancement of safe and high quality health care for the NICU department. It was such a rewarding experience to work with others who care so much about the health and wellbeing of women and children. It is my passion to travel the world to help create a healthy, safe, and thriving environment for our children. Volunteered March 29, 2017 - April 7, 2017
My first experience volunteering was in April 2018, which was a challenging, interesting, and overall an extremely positive experience. I found the nurses, doctors and midwives at St Paul's to be hardworking, dedicated to their profession and eager to learn/collaborate. I came to understand and appreciate that Wax and Gold's primary means of improving neonatal outcomes is through investing in the education and professional development of the neonatal care team at St Paul's. This approach really resonated with me and motivated me to continue volunteering with the organization. In terms of the city, I found Addis to be lively and fascinating, with exceptionally warm people and great food!
Volunteered April 7th - 20th, 2018
Will be heading back to Addis November 26th - 9th, 2018
