Ethiopian Neonatal Advanced Life Support (ENALS) Training!

The Ethiopian Neonatal Advanced Life Support (ENALS) service at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) is excited to announce that our third training group has completed the program! The ENALS program was created to address the disproportionate mortality and morbidity burden carried by neonates immediately after birth and in the first several days of life. The training reviews the most critical elements of Essential Newborn Care (basic resuscitation, thermal care, nutrition support, and hygiene practices) and then builds upon these practices by incorporating more advanced elements of neonatal resuscitation. The NALS providers receive didactic and simulation instruction in provision of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and positive-pressure ventilation with a T-piece resuscitator, advanced airways (endotracheal tubes and laryngeal mask airway), chest compressions, vascular access, emergency medications, plastic wrap for thermoregulation, postnatal care (thermoregulation with KMC, breastfeeding initiation, intra- and inter-facility transportation of the sick newborn), end-of-life care, data collection, and quality improvement methodologies.

We are excited to share photos from the 9-day simulation workshop for the third cohort of Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS) providers. This reflects an expansion of the ENALS program to three new health care facilities in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, including Ras Desta Damtew Memorial Hospital, Meshualekia Health Center, and Gelan Health Center. A HUGE thank you to the NALS program facilitators, Ethiopian administrative staff, and onsite mentorship from the Wax and Gold, Inc. leadership team.
